Fiber + Backhoe = Bad
Soooo we get a call from a customer that their link dropped. Upon further investigation, their fiber runs back to a local university and then jumps to their location. A little more digging shows that the city was installing a fire hydrant along that line. A quick call to the city yields us the information that “We hit the conduit, but you should be ok.” Once we get it dug up, the conduit is busted and our fiber is CRUSHED.
Better now then on the 24th or the 25th.
Do acts-of-backhoe count against your SLA?
This actually happened like a month ago…and since this was A&M riding this fiber, they don’t give a flip what happens to you…as long as they stay up…hehehe.
Good Bull- Gig’em!
Hoden you bastige! I forgot you are an old ag…;)
That’s right- 5 dolla says that city worker is a t-sip insider at the city of CS!! Hope all is well with you and yours this holiday season, dude! Here’s to great geeky toys in ’10!
In Australia we call this Backhoe Attenuation! 🙂
Gotta love the “it’ll be fine” attitude of people who make that sort of mess :-/
I love it Andrew! Backhoe Attenuation…hehehe. They were nice enough to dig the fiber back up for us, so they aren’t all bad…:)
Thats good to hear, normally the fibre issues we have to deal with are in IDF’s onsite where a tradie has come along to drill/cut/move something and ends up just pulling/squashing/tieing the fibre up nearby *winces*.
By the time we get there to identify the issue they’re gone and its “No no I put that back where it was its fine!” *facepalm*
Luckily we don’t have a lot of contractors roaming our equipment closets. Most of them are supervised into the closets, soooo if something breaks we can hit them with a hammer. An MC Hammer…we make them wear gold parachute pants and dance sideways…not a pretty site.
