{"id":5319,"date":"2016-08-05T13:12:40","date_gmt":"2016-08-05T19:12:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregsowell.com\/?p=5319"},"modified":"2016-08-05T13:12:40","modified_gmt":"2016-08-05T19:12:40","slug":"ubiquiti-edgeswitch-16-xg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregsowell.com\/?p=5319","title":{"rendered":"Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch 16 XG"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/gregsowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/edgeswitch16.png\" alt=\"edgeswitch16\" width=\"576\" height=\"211\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-5320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gregsowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/edgeswitch16.png 576w, https:\/\/gregsowell.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/edgeswitch16-300x110.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ubnt.com\/edgemax\/edgeswitch-16-xg\/\">Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch 16 XG<\/a> is UBNT&#8217;s new 16 port 10Gb switch.<\/p>\n<p>It boasts:<\/p>\n<li>12 SFP+ ports<\/li>\n<li>4 RJ45 ports that support 1Gb or 10Gb<\/li>\n<li>360Gbps throughput<\/li>\n<li>238.1 MPPS<\/li>\n<li>36W of power on chassis alone(no optics)<\/li>\n<li>Serial console port<\/li>\n<li>Web interface<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Industry standard CLI&#8221; &#8211; Which I take to mean Cisco like<\/li>\n<li><strong>Price around $550<\/strong><\/li>\n<p>I&#8217;ve heard nothing but good things about the existing edgeswitches, and this one is shaping up to be no different.<\/p>\n<p>It looks like all ports are line rate, which is really expected from any switch manufactured these days.<\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough they mention some routing capabilities: Static routing(up to 16 routes), Policy Based Routing, 15 routed interfaces.  I don&#8217;t believe they have any numbers for routing, so just pretend like this isn&#8217;t an option.  Looking at the rest of the features, this is truly a switch, and should be treated as such.<\/p>\n<p>They also mention this can act as a DHCP server&#8230;which is also very strange to me.  I&#8217;m sure there is a use case somewhere for it.  Specs show 128 pools with a max of 2048 leases, which would be a fair sized property.<\/p>\n<p>It also has:<\/p>\n<li>IPv4 and IPv6 Mgmnt support<\/li>\n<li>SNMP<\/li>\n<li>802.1x for authenticated access to ports<\/li>\n<li>255 VLANs &#8211; which should be plenty for most sites<\/li>\n<li>8K MAC addresses &#8211; again, should be plenty<\/li>\n<li>STP\/RSTP\/MSTP support for loop prevention<\/li>\n<li>4 MSTP instances<\/li>\n<li>802.1ad for Link Aggregation(LAG){up to 6 instances} &#8211; You Cisco guys would call it etherchannel &#8211; linux would call it bonding<\/li>\n<li>Access lists(filtering traffic) &#8211; 100 with up to 10 rules per port<\/li>\n<li>Looks like fairly standard QoS support &#8211; at these speeds, especially with LAGs, it seems hard to think you would be overrunning port speeds<\/li>\n<p>I&#8217;m excited to see these guys hit the market.  This will, by a WIDE margin, be the cheapest 10Gb switch I&#8217;ve seen hit the market.  I can&#8217;t wait to get my hands on one to test with.  At this price point, I won&#8217;t be surprised to see it hit the core of some enterprise, not just provider networks.  <\/p>\n<p>At some point in the future I&#8217;d love to see multichassis link aggregation(MLAG).  This gives you the ability to do a LAG from a single device(like a router) to two different switches.
