{"id":2127,"date":"2010-09-01T19:29:30","date_gmt":"2010-09-02T01:29:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gregsowell.com\/?p=2127"},"modified":"2010-09-01T19:29:30","modified_gmt":"2010-09-02T01:29:30","slug":"rs232-to-ip-converter-with-macgyvered-poe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gregsowell.com\/?p=2127","title":{"rendered":"RS232 to IP Converter &#8211; With MacGyvered PoE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been working on connecting to our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tycoemea.com\/English\/Products\/Access\/kantechreaders\/kantechveriprox.asp\">Bioscript <\/a>readers&#8230;bio metric entry devices.  You can upload thumb templates one way&#8230;standing at the device with an RS232 cable&#8230;not ideal!<\/p>\n<p>What I did was install some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.neteon.net\/Product\/340-3-13-365\/GW212#spec\">RS232 to IP converters<\/a>.  These guys are a little over a eighty bucks each, but they are well worth the money.  They map a virtual com port over to a windows or linux machine.  This allows us to administer the readers from anywhere!  These guys will take up to 24 volt DC so you could use a standard PoE injector, but that&#8217;s not any fun!<\/p>\n<p>What I did was to create a couple of special cables.
